He was sent to administration, he told the principal that he did not realize that he had the lock in his hand, but in the end everything settled down when he sent a apologize letter to Jerry. One of Ben’s friends Jerry, shoved into him while he was trying to open his locker and he hit him with the lock and blood started gushing from Jerry's forehead. Later, Ben started to go to church to learn more about God and was baptized again at the age of 12.īen Carson struggled with his temper during middle school. Then afterward, Ben starts talking about the time when his mom was having the help of psychotic service and that a lady named, Mary Thomas saw her and told her about God. Soon Ben started to ask his mom for new clothes to be apart of the cool and focusing on basketball instead of studying, which slowly, but surely made his grades drop. Ben was worried that the kids in his school would find out that he was poverty-stricken and really poor, he was especially fearful of the kids in his school discovering that he was on food stamps. At the new school, there is something called capped, which is to get the last and better remark and Ben kept getting capped so he decided to retaliate and eventually became the top capper, which made people stop wanting to cap him. Ben faces the problem of temptation of wanting to become one of the cool kids. In his new school, Ben always get made fun of because of how his clothes looked and is in a school that is mostly populated by black and has a minority of white kids. In the middle of Ben's 8th grade school year, he goes to a new middle school. His grades were terrible at first but he eventually got them up and became the smartest kid in the class. At his new school their was a majority of white kids so he experienced racial prejudice and discrimination. Ben learned that he wanted to help people and become a doctor. Sermons and music started to "speak" to him and helped him to feel safe and comfortable. He became more interested into his religion, Christianity, and started practicing his religion often. Even though she did not earn much money, she made sure the boys had an amazing Christmas and gave them many toys that they really wanted. Since his father had recently left his family, his mom put in an extra effort to make the boys happy. His mom worked really hard and was always tired but she never forgot to ask him about his day or what he did at school that day. Even though Carson's family had a hard time adapting to the new area, they never lost their sense of family unity. His new house was very dirty and was crawling with rats and bugs. Carson had just moved from Detroit to Boston in 1959 and stayed until 1961.
